Maezm “Sharing Watch”

maezm sharing watch

It is the tiniest of gestures in watch design – but it’s one that I’m loving. As a young kid without a watch I often had to steal glances off other people’s wrists to determine the time, and I’ve always appreciated people wearing watches with very legible faces. The “Sharing Watch” by Korean design studio maezm takes the concept a little further:

When someone asks what time is it, the wearer simply has to raise his arm: the watch face is rotated clockwise 90degrees, making it easier for both parties to read the time.

maezm sharing watch 2

And it’s all achieved by simply (though really, this is probably the difficult part requiring very sensitive observation) discovering and communicating this very natural habit; and the rest of the design was probably straightforward with no modifications (minus the watch face orientation).

Clever!

Its great Ben Jai!!Keep it up..

When ever the word “server” comes to mind or in a talk we often site to the hardware manufactured(orimage composed) by MNC’s like Dell,Sun,Intel etc..But Google with its search engine has to redefine “its server” term because If It has bought costly servers from any heavy manufacturers then It has to pay a lot and also differential efficiency matters

On April 1,2009 Google has revealed its secret server that has been in use from 2005.The astonishing fact is that even sun has revealed its server rack concept before getting it in practice and won many accolades but Google using such heavy efficient server racks for more than 3 years in secrecy is a lot to think. In 2005 Google had thought to redefine its server strategy as on Internet  word “search” is replaced by “Google” mostly stressing on cost and energy efficiency.

image

It is interesting to see that there is a battery in each server. In any power failure situation alternate power comes to rescue as UPS but here several questions were raised to Ben as why he adopted such a Battery approach. His answer was simple.

Any UPS in the market doesn’t have efficiency more than 96%.This 12V battery is used to power the server when there is power outage.Normally batteries have more efficiency and we achieved energy efficiency up to 99.9%  constantly.

He also confirmed that Google's data centers now have reached efficiency levels that the Environmental Protection Agency hopes will be attainable in 2011 using advanced technology. This server uses 2 Intel Nehalem processors on Gigabyte boards.See this page to know more interesting facts about this beast. It was said that these boards are specially designed only for Google and are not available in markets. It has 8 DIMM sockets. This whole server was designed by Ben in 2005.It was revealed that he churned out a lot of his ability to get such low cost server as Google started taking in fresh hardware Managers in late 2005 as his colleagues.

Info to be known before buying laptop!

This question will intrigue a lot for anyone..”Which laptop is the best laptop?”….

To answer this question I should speak out some concepts about computing and laptops.

1)Processors :-

Processor is the most important part of laptop.Today normal laptops should have Processors like

1)Intel Core 2 Duo Pxxx and Txxx series

2)Intel Core 2 Extreme(Quad-core Xxxx)image

3)AMD Turion 64

4)AMD Turion 64 X2

5)AMD Turion Ultra

6)Intel ATOM

7)Intel Centrino

Intel Core 2 Duo (Merom)

This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more current consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

Features are 2 cores, a 64-bit EM64T command amplification and 2 or 4 MB L2 Cache and 291 millions of transistors, which are finished in 65 nm. Furthermore all types support "Execute Disable Bit" technics, SSSE3 (SSE4), Enhanced Speedstep,  LaGrande and most types the virtualisation technics (VT) Vanderpool.

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Cure 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower tensions (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

Now, the Core 2 Duo exists in the following versions (sorted by performance):

The energy need of the processors is marked by pre-set letters in front of the type designation (number).
X ... Extreme (fastest) version with the highest current consumption
E ... >= 55 Watt (Desktop PCs)
T ... 30-39 Watt (Standard laptop CPUs)
P ... max 25 Watt
L ... 12-19 Watt (Low Voltage)
U ... <11.9 Watt (Ultra Low Voltage)

The 4-digit sequence indicates the type series (first digit) and performance (other digits). The Core 2 mobile processors ought to get 5XXX and 7XXX (at present T2XXX for Core Duo and T1XXX for Core Solo).

In Summer 2007, the Santa Rosa update has been published with minimal improvements (like the faster FSB 800 and Dynamic Acceleration - the overclocking of one core, when the other one is idle).

In January 2008, Intel introduced new T9xxx and T8xxx Core 2 Duo processors based on the new "Penryn" core. These processors are fabricated in the 45nm (the predecessors in 65nm) and offer a bigger level 2 Cache (3 and 6 MB). Furthermore, Penryn got a faster division unit and 47 new SSE orders (SSE4 called).

Core 2 Duo was presented in 31. July 2006 with the following versions (versions with FSB 800 and Dat - dynamic acceleration technology in 05.09.07):

U7500, 1.06 GHz, 2 MB L2, 533 MHz FSB, VT - 10 Watts

Intel Core 2 Extreme (Merom, Penryn)

The fastest Core 2 Duo variants of Intel are called Core 2 Extreme. Technically, these processors are based on a Merom/Penryn (X9000) core like all other Core 2 Duo  processors,  too.

Models:
X7800, 2.6 GHz, FSB 800, 4 MB L2, 44 Watt TDP, Merom, 07.2007 image
X7900, 2.8 GHz, FSB 800, 4 MB L2, 44 Watt TDP, Merom, 09.2007
X9000, 2.8 GHz, FSB 800, 6 MB L2, 44 Watt TDP, Penryn, 01.2008
X9100, 3.06 GHz, FSB 1066, 6 MB L2, ? Watt TDP, Penryn, 06.2008

Intel Core 2 Solo (Merom)

This is the successor of the Core Solo and technically a Core 2 Duo with only one core. It will be available for laptops starting with the 3. quarter 2007 and only as an Ultra Low Voltage (ULV). Therefore the core tension is very low (=economic). 2 versions are planned at moment:

  • U2100, 1.2 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 533 MHz FSB, 5 W max. TDP
  • U2200, 1.06 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 533 FSB, 5 W max. TDP

Intel Core Duo (Yonah)

Pentium M successor
Double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption. The 2 MB L2 Cache are used together by the double. The maximum capacity of 31 watts is only 4 watts more than with the Pentium M (predecessor). Both cores are lowered automatically and independently of each other by speed steps down to 1 GHz. In addition it now supports also SSE3 instructions.

After first benchmarks the Core Duo completes all tests at least just as fast as a equivalent Pentium M. With applications, which were designed for multi-processors, the performance can be nearly twice as fast as with the Pentium M (e.g. CineBench around 86% fast)

Models (clock, TDP):
T2700 (2.33 GHz, 31 W, FSB 667 MHz)
T2600 (2.16 GHz, 31 W, FSB 667 MHz)
T2500 (2.00 GHz, 31 W, FSB 667 MHz)
T2450 (2.00 GHz, FSB 533 MHz)

U2500 ULV, 1.20 GHz, 9.5 W, FSB 533 MHz
U2400 ULV, 1.06 GHz, 9.5 W, FSB 533 MHz

Pentium Dual Core T2060: 1.6 GHz, FSB 533 MHz, 1 MB L2 Cache (the return of the name Pentium, though Yonah core)
Pentium Dual Core T2080: 1.73 GHz, FSB 533 MHz, 1 MB L2 Cache

Intel Core Solo

Single core version of the Core Duo and successor of the Intel Pentium M; Because of the 65nm reduced structure width also smaller current consumption than Pentium M (maximally 27 Watts); the performance is comparable with the equivalent clocked Pentium M (somewhat faster because of a few improvements).

Models:
T1200 mit 1.50 GHz, FSB 667 MHz, 2MB L2 Cache
T1300 with 1,66 GHz 2MB L2 Cache
T1350 with 1.86 GHz, FSB 533 MHz, 2MB L2 Cache (about the same level like Pentium M 750)
T1400 mit 1.83 GHz, FSB 667 MHz, 2MB L2 Cache

Ultra low voltage models (maximum 5.5 Watt):
U1300 mit 1.06 GHz, FSB 667 MHz, 2MB L2 Cache
U1400 mit 1.20 GHz, FSB 667 MHz, 2MB L2 Cache
U1500 mit 1.33 GHz, FSB 667 MHz, 2MB L2 Cache

AMD Turion X2 Ultra

The Turion X2 Ultra was introduced in Q2 2008 and the core is based on the old K9 architecture (Turion 64 X2) with some K10 (Dektop Phenom) parts like the Crossbar-Swithc, HyperTransport 3.0 link, memory controller). Because of the bigger L2 cache (of the Ultra models), the performance is a bit better than a similar clocked Turion 64 X2. Furthermore, the current consumption went a bit down. Still the performance is not compareable to a similar clocked Core 2 Duo (which feature up to 6 MB L2 Cache).

AMD Turion64 X2

64 bit dual core (2 core) processor, code name Taylor (2 x 256 KB L2) and Trinidad (2 x 512 KB L2), DDR2-667 support, Pacifica (AMD-v) virtualisation technics, 31-35 W TDP, socket S1, 90 nm fabrication, separated L2 Caches, integrated 333 MHz DDR, 800 MHz Hypertransport

AMD Turion 64 X2 is intended to be positioned against the Intel Core Duo was presented in 17. May 2006. The current consumption is not higher than with Centrino-Duo-notebooks (TL-45 with ATI Xpress and Mobility Radeon X300). This means, that approximative the same battery runtime and fan functions can be expected (with this chipset). However, the performance was 20% below the T2300 (1.66 GHz) due to the lower L2 Cache (Core Duo has 2048 Kbyte shared L2 Cache). Nevertheless, the performance is sufficient.

In March 2007 a Turion 64 with reduced structure was announced (as a response to Intels Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo), which have up to 2.3 GHz.

TL-50 1.6 GHz 2 x 256 KB L2 Cache, 31 Watt TDP
TL-52 1.6 GHz 2 x 512 KB L2 Cache, 31 Watt TDP
TL-56 1.8 GHz 2 x 512 KB L2 Cache, 33 Watt TDP, 65nm (31 Watt after May 07)
TL-58 1.9 GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache, 31 Watt TDP, 65nm
TL-60 2.0 GHz 2 x 512 KB L2 Cache, 35 Watt TDP, 65nm
TL-64 2.2 GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache, 35 Watt TDP, 65nm
TL-66 2.3 GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache, 35 Watt TDP, 65nm

AMD Turion 64

This is a derivative of the Athlon 64 with SSE3 and nx storage protection, 32 and 64 bit support, integrated memory controller for PC3200 memory, current save mode, HT800. The ML versions have a TDP of 35 Watt and the MB versions 25 Watt.

Speeds:
MT-30 / ML-30 (1.6 GHz, 1 MB L2)
MT-32 / ML-32 (1.8 GHz, 512 KB L2)
MT-34 / ML-34 (1.8 GHz, 1 MB L2)
MK-36 (2.0 GHz, 512 KB L2, 31 Watt TDP)
MT-37 / ML-37 (2.0 GHz, 1 MB L2)
MT-40 / ML-40 (2.2 GHz, 1 MB L2)
ML-42 (2.4 GHz, 512 KB L2)
ML-44 (2.4 GHz, 1 MB L2)

Regarding the consumption MT might be very similar to a Pentium M. The speed is moderate and approximately as fast as an Pentium M with equivalent clock speed.

AMD Athlon 64 X2

In contrary to the rare cases, where Desktop Athlon 64 X2 processors are inserted in DTR laptops, AMD introduced in summer 2007 the "Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processors for laptop PCs" series with CPUs, which are based on the Turion 64 X2 core. The CPU is designed for socket S1 and contains an integrated DDR2 memory controller.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-53, 65 nm, 1700 MHz, 31 W TDP
AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-55, 65 nm, 1800 MHz, 31 W TDP

NoTE: AMD Turion is the most widely accepted processor by Notebook Manufacturers.

There are lot of things I had to say about these processors…….

These Specifications speak a lot Model name,Processor clock speed, amount of cache in the processor and in some specification You can find FSB(Front Side Bus) in MHz its the speed..This FSB is like tree in the whole Computer hardware which connects all the components from Processor to external components like Printers,USBs etc…

The Watt reading is the amount of power processor takes while working.Higher the amount of Watt heavier is the heat produced. So,Laptop manufacturers should design to dissipate the processor’s heat.

The immediate difference one may find is their identifying model numbers.

  • nm stands for nano meter.
  • Code name of Intel processors comes from the a name of any local neighborhood near by to the Intel development facility in which it is developed

Intel 65nm processors are the 1st batch of Core architecture product code named Conroe / Conroe XE / Conroe L / Allendale / Merom / Merom XE / Kentsfield / Kentsfield XE.

Intel 45nm Penryn processors are the second batch of the successful Core architecture with Code name Penryn / Wolfdale / Yorkfield / Yorkfield XE.

45nm consume less power, produce less heat, thus increase overclock limit. And yes, the board which accepts 45nm processor can accept 65Nm also.

The big question is In Today’s market U can find only Core 2 Duo T and P series for their efficiency. So,what to select?

P series is the best as they consume low power when compared to T series Processor!.If your Budget is enough to get Notebook with Processor T700 above or p700 above or Processor speed more than 2GHz try for 2.4GHz and above..then I can say that your notebook is powerful..See that FSB is higher than 667 MHz try for 800MHz ..

There are very less number of Laptops with Quad-Core or Core 2 Extreme processors and presently this processor is considered for high Graphical or Engineering development/usage.

2)RAM:-

There should enough amount of RAM to run your programs..If you open 4-5 High end applications like Adobe Photoshop, Matlab, Auto CAD, Netbeans IDE etc..or any high graphical game..they consume a lot of RAM.To make your programs to run smoothly You need heavier RAM.Windows Vista needs minimum of 2 GB RAM which gave strict message to manufacturers that 2 GB Ram is normal these days..So,For anyone 4GB to 6GB of RAM will give an handful  hope to run future applications.

RAM also has speed of functioning just like FSB.So see that its speed of functioning is also 667MHz above and try for 800MHz …Dont bother about DDR3 or SDRAM they are the latest technology in RAM.Just know that U get the standard new technology in the market.Don’t believe the dealer..see the specs..

3) Hard Dish(HDD) or SSD :-

Hard Disk is like the capacity of the laptop. They vary with their capacity like 160GB,250GB,320GB500GB etc…image if you are a hardcore gamer then try to get any HDD with 7200 rpm.For a 15”in laptops 320GB HDD is commonly found while 17” laptop has different setup of HDDs.Some 17” laptops have 2 Hard disks giving options to customize according to your need in Dell XPS 1730 It has 2 hard disks giving capacity range from 160GB to 1000GB using both. While in some other 17” laptops have conventional HDD means only one but a larger  one.

In HDD there will be a motor. Its speed is given in specs like 5200 rpm or 7200 rpm.A 5200 rpm HDD is sufficient for normal applications but a Game needs higher RAM, heavier flow of data from HDD to RAM, AGP card.To meet this demand of data from HDD 5200 rpm speed is not sufficient. So, HDD with 7200 rpm is needed.Consider this option as a valid one when You are trying to get a laptop beyond $500-$600.

SSD is a lot different when compared to HDD.SSD(Solid State Drive) doesn’t have any motor and it uses switching circuit technique to store Data. So,rather than storing and retrieving data using magnetic  disc it uses electronic circuits. So,though they are costlier they give longer life as they don't have any rotating component like motor inside.

4) LCD :-

Many customers  don’t consider this as an important thing. They think  they are getting value of money they pay for laptop.Full HD resolution is 1920 X 1200.The future of TV is full HD.Full HD asks extra bucks but the clarity it provides differs a lot.If U connect display to a TV having full HD feature, then there will be a thrill in clarity.

5) Graphics Card :-

This is the most important part of Laptop.A laptop with Graphics card does a lot of things easily when compared to normal one.Today every Os has a lot of Graphics which easily slows the RAM.Any application needs RAM whether it may be a media software, game, graphics and mostly when U play a game RAM is consumed more.its not because of your game but its because of RAM property.

lets think RAM runs at the speed of ‘X’ and gives ‘A’ amount of its memory for a game. But a game needs 2.5X of RAM speed to keep up its Graphics.RAM couldn’t run at speed higher than X.So, Game takes of 2.5A amount of RAM for speed of X.Simply saying it takes a lot of RAM.To address this issue Graphics Cards are concerned.what AGP(Accelerated Graphics Port also called Advanced Graphics Port) Card does is It grabs all the applications asking for Graphics from RAM and executes them at required speed, means either 2.5X or 4X.

There is other way to get these Graphics executed without AGP card. This is considered as Extreme tuning of processor.Processor is the heart of CPU.If it runs faster everything is fast. So,Processor speed is increased manually. This process of increasing speed of any processor is called ‘over-clocking’.A normal 2.4GHz processor can run at 4-5GHz by using the settings in the BIOS,but I must caution this could kill the processor If U are not a professional.Change the setting in BIOS to overclock the processor and also increase the voltage levels of FSB and RAM approximately to the required level.GET NO2 cylinder as its the best cooling agent. When a Processor is Overclocked it delivers a lot of heat enough to kill It.Get a temperature equipment enough to measure temperatures 300C.If possible get a copper plate or small copper bowl.keep aside the Fan which is on the processor, donot plug it off..let it plug in or else whole Mother board will turn off.Keep the copper bowl on the processor, stick the sensor of temperature measuring equipment below the plate/bowl..because above the plate/bowl NO2 will be delivered which could run the temperature to negative..to get the exact temperature sensor should be sticked at below the bowl..but aside to the processor. Now change the setting of bios and restart the system. If U are running Xp U can see that It will not take more than 10 seconds to get login screen…whhooilaaa!!!!…now, run a game like NFS MW/FEAR/GRID/ game with high graphic content.. and see the way it runs..U will be mesmerized as if U are in third world…See that whenever the temperature is crossing 50C then start leaving out NO2 in to the copper bowl/plate which is on the processor.(Wow!!I did more than 100 times and this had cost me more than $25000 to get a big 25KG NO2 cylinder)

OK!!out of this overclocking now….Any AGP card is same as RAM but with faster memory modules.Just as RAM AGP card also comes with different capacity like 256MB,512MB,1GB etc…Any laptop at the range of $600 and above has a graphics card. There is a lot off competition but only 2 MNC’s are flourishing the competition. They are Nvidia and ATI(AMD).They are competing in AGP card segment since decades. The best graphics card is the most difficult question to answer. To know the answer see this toms’s hardware site .

6)Other Features :-

Well i discussed a lot about internal/necessary  parts of a laptop hardware. There are many things like image touch pad, finger print reader, backlit keyboard, number of USB ports, HDMI port to connect LCD with External TV,fall sensor for HDD,BD-ROM,6 or 9 cell battery,Wi-Fi,Bluetooth,Wireless Network card,TV Tuner,External Mouse and keyboard,Docking stations etc... which can be understood just by see the package or browsing the Net.

Thats it guys,I told what I thought to share with U and remember one thing…..Guess the amount of time U’ll be working with the new coming laptop.if U are thinking that U’ll be with the new beast for at least 4-5 years then simply get 2 year warranty along.

Guys I’ll be touching U with post on recommended laptops…

Do u know about Scotoma??

image Scotoma is a typical spot(s) caused by visual problems surrounded by the normal visual activity. The picture shows a case of Scotoma. It is said that this Scotoma is not a constant spot.It moves around in the vision.

Many Doctors say that Scotoma is the problem of collision of the vision of the two eyes. Even a normal person who is not seeing such light/dark spots in his vision has Scotoma unconsciously. For some people it is very much scintillating like no channel on old TV(see the  pic below).

image

So,what's the reason for such conscious vision?.

The reason is not that one eye is not able to catch the picture .Lets take this way.we can’t see the objects that are extreme right with left eye but in normal vision we could see the whole objects??This is due to the optic nerve which sends the visual activity of both eyes to brain. And Brain overlaps the visionary part that is same in both images of respective Left and right eye and adds the right portion of right eye along with left portion of left eye. Each eye has its respective optic nerve. If there is a problem with this nerve then such problems arises in vision. So, visual signals absent in both eyes are mixed. If optic nerve got damaged enough which is unable to send signals then such spots will occur as these spots are not conveyed to brain By the Optic Nerve.

See this Scintillating Video of Scotoma.

Think Big, Dream Big –an Electric Car

image

image  Well, We see a lot of fuzz about clean & green energy .have You ever considered what are the advancements that are going on in Automobile Industry for such Energy. If yes/No,lets see some concepts here..

Do anyone know Musk,

Musk is a 37-year-old technology entrepreneur who became extremely wealthy when eBay bought PayPal, which he had co-founded. A lanky South African, he is using that wealth to finance two quixotic efforts. The first is SpaceX, a company he hopes will one day make it possible to colonize Mars. (I kid you not,Let us wish for this success also.)

The second is Tesla Motors, which was started in 2003 — Musk became its chief backer and board chairman in early 2004. After raising $150 million and going through four years of technological and internal struggles, the company has begun manufacturing the first-ever all-electric sports car, the Tesla Roadster. Its base price is $109,000. And if Musk is willing to concede that the Roadster, by itself, isn't a world-changer, he fervently believes that the technology Tesla has created — technology that gives the car a range of 227 miles per battery charge, and enough acceleration to go from zero to 60 in under 4 seconds — will indeed change the world. The age of the electric car, he is convinced, has dawned.

The Tesla Roadster is a gorgeous sports car. That's not a surprise: one of Tesla's goals was to prove that an electric car didn't have to look stodgy — or resemble something out of "The Jetsons." Tesla's other goal, though, was to show that an electric vehicle could provide a driving experience that was a good or better than any finely tuned sports car.

They appear to have succeeded at that as well. "My experience was highly positive," said Don Sherman, the technical editor at Automobile magazine who test-drove it last December. "It was a very exciting, very interesting piece of work that I found quite appealing." Though I'm no auto expert, I'd have to agree. I took the wheel for an hour last week and came away exhilarated by how quickly it accelerated, and how beautifully it handled. For the first time in my life, I had car lust.

So far the company has delivered four cars, with 27 more in production. It has 1,080 customers waiting patiently for a Roadster, which is a year behind schedule. (Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, both Tesla investors, are scheduled to get cars seven and eight.) Tesla expects to be delivering four cars a week soon, a number it eventually hopes to double.

But for all its sex appeal, the Roadster only hints at Tesla's real ambition. By the end of 2010, Musk and his executive team expect to be manufacturing a five-seat, all-electric $60,000 sedan. This, however, will be a much more expensive and difficult task — and many auto experts doubt that Tesla can pull it off. Which raises the question of whether the era of the electric car is really about to begin, as Musk believes — or whether the Tesla Roadster is little more than an expensive toy for rich people.

In the documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car?" — about the EV1, an all-electric car General Motors began making in 1996 and killed once and for all in 2003 — the filmmakers posit the theory that the vehicle was done in by a grand conspiracy involving the oil industry, the Bush administration and the car industry. But that's not what happened. Gas was cheap when the EV1 was on the market; auto buyers preferred S.U.V.'s. And the technology didn't exist to allow the EV1 to become a viable mass-market automobile. Among its flaws, the EV1 used a nickel metal hydride battery that couldn't get more than 75 miles before needing a charge.

"My daily commute was 37 miles one way," wrote a man named Michael Posner on a Web site called The Truth About Cars, who drove an EV1 for several weeks back in 1997. "Every trip was loaded with drama," he added. "If I went to lunch, I gave up a few precious miles. That could mean disaster." At General Motors, they took to calling this problem "range anxiety." Is it any wonder the car didn't catch on?

Jump ahead a decade. Oil is so expensive that everybody is thinking about alternatives to $4.50-a-gallon gasoline. At the same time, the technology that makes electric cars possible has greatly improved. The development of lithium ion batteries, in particular, was such a great leap forward that it has made it possible, with enough additional innovation by electric car companies, to produce vehicles that get more than 200 miles. Suddenly, an electric car seems viable.

image

Other automakers -- including Chrysler, Mitsubishi and Ford -- also touted their plans for cars equipped with electric motors as the industry both seeks to overcome the current crisis that has decimated sales and meet increasingly tough environmental and carbon emission standards.
Only European giant VW bucked the trend, saying its answer to the electric car would come out "in the coming decade."
European drivers could be silently cruising around in the Ampera by the end of 2011 -- the first 60 kilometers on pure electricity augmented by another 500 kilometers of extended range from a gasoline engine, which would generate less than 40 grams of C02 emissions per kilometer.

The Ampera presented in Geneva was a white four-door sedan with a hatchback -- and a set of front headlights that created a menacing, masculine impression. An Opel official demonstrated how the car could easily be plugged into any household electrical supply. "This is the kind of game-changing technology that the auto industry needs to respond to energy and environmental challenges," President of GM Europe Carl Peter Forster said. Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said it has reached an understanding with Peugeot Citroen PSA to sell its new electric car "i MiEV" to European customers as early as late next year.

Mitsubishi's president Osamu Masuko said the collaboration could help pave the road to "tomorrow's sunny days" for the automotive industry, which is struggling amid the global economic downturn and a decline in global sales. Peugeot will sell the car under its own brand in Europe, while Mitsubishi will launch the car in Japan this year. The four-door electric-only hatchback produces no carbon dioxide emissions and has a top speed of 130 kilometers per hour (80 mph). It has a range of 145 kilometers once its 330-volt lithium ion battery is charged for 14 hours.

By contrast, Ford and Chrysler showed only concept cars that illustrate the company's thinking about electric cars.
Ford's presented at its stand a five-seater passenger vehicle called the Tourneo developed for European markets by Smith Electric Vehicles, part of the Tanfield Group, which developed the Ford Connect van in the United States.
"The plan is to go into production as soon as we feel the market is ready for production," Tanfield CEO Darren Kell said.
Chrysler showed its Dodge Circuit EV sports car, which was unveiled in Detroit.

VW is moving more slowly. Chairman Martin Winterkorn said the German automaker would launch its first electric vehicle "in the next decade" ."Announcements alone have never brought new technology onto the road," Winterkorn told a presentation at the Geneva Auto Show. "It's a long path to safe electric cars that are available for everyone. We are not talking about being the one with the fastest solution. We want the best solution". "We expect to increase market share. Not volumes," Winterkorn said. Translation: VW cars will outsell their competitors, even as new car sales shrink.

  1. User sees the ad on magazine, follows instruction to the MINI website.
  2. User holds the magazine in front of his own webcam.
  3. MINI website detects the orientation of the magazine, super-imposes a 3D model of the MINI car on the magazine on the monitor.

Pakistan has to do a lot of things!?!

In BBC on Nov08, there was post showing insights of terror in Pakistan.I would like to share a deep brief with the residents living in the places shown below….I just copied and pasted this whole post from BBC site, link is here http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7595827.stm

Voices from unstable borders

Pakistan-Afghanistan map

Despite being driven from power, a resurgent Taleban is at large in parts of Afghanistan and militants are still active in tribal areas along the Pakistani-Afghan border.

Here, people in the some of the most restive regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan talk about security and militancy where they live.

KANDAHAR, AFGHANISTAN

One Kandahari resident, Asif, says villagers in outlying districts are often forced to co-operate with the Taleban.

There is Taleban activity in districts outside Kandahar city like Panjwayi, Maywand, Zhari, Shah Walikot and Arghandab district.

The people who live where the Taleban live have to support them but this does not mean that people like them. The Taleban want food and accommodation from locals. If Nato forces attack or an air strike is called in, the Taleban escape but the local people suffer.

I have heard that the Taleban have small groups in the villages, they are not organized, not under one command and the villagers say they do not have one strategy.

Mapping the militant nexus

New patterns of militancy

Voices from unstable borders

More coverage throughout the day on BBC World News and BBC World Service

The cost of living is high here. I know that in some cases, people are going to join military forces - either the government or the Taleban - because they need to feed their families.

Nobody likes the Taleban here. They took the people of the south by force. This year is the worst in recent times. I remember when we could go to any district in Kandahar with no fear. Now we cannot travel.

Popal, a telecoms worker, says people have deserted the districts surrounding the city of Kandahar.

The militants are not threatening any civilians in the city. Only those who work for international organisations or the government receive threatening letters.

I come from the Durai area where Isaf [Nato-led] and Canadian forces are working near the main roads and the situation is very bad. Roadside attacks are very common and people are killed almost daily. It makes people afraid of going out of town and onto the roads.

There is a village called Pashimol which is particularly disturbed and I recently heard of heavy fighting there.

The insurgents wait outside the city to attack by night. They seem to be almost everywhere. They want to terrorise and this is very easy for them. The police are only deployed around the city.

So the people who live outside the city have a very difficult life. Many of them have just come to Kandahar because life is more secure now here.

Most of the outlying districts are now empty.

Anwar says life is dangerous for those Afghans working for international companies and coalition forces.

Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers and policemen stand guard at the site of two suicide attacks in Kandahar on September 7, 2008

There are still security threats in Kandahar city

The districts next to the city feel the presence of the Taleban and no one dares work with the government or international NGOs. People even feel afraid to openly admire their activities in case of retaliation by insurgents.

If you work for yourself and keep a low profile you have no worries. But for people who work with the government and coalition forces you must keep an even lower profile. Those Afghans will be on the insurgents' blacklist.

Life is tough. We hear of killing and kidnappings. We can't make any long term plans - we just have to live life day by day.

The situation is worse than last year because insurgents are using new techniques to warn people not to help the government, coalition forces or NGOs. People are seeking ways to leave the country.

KUNAR, AFGHANISTAN

Mohammed says the real danger in Kunar province follows the US soldiers.

Life in Asadabad, the capital of Kunar, seems pretty normal. But if you go to rural areas, there is violence. It is not so quiet there. I can't really talk about that because I generally remain in the centre of Kunar. In the city, I have seen very little violence in recent times.

It is hard to tell what is happening out in the districts. When I have been to rural areas I haven't seen anything myself. Here in the centre we get bad news and good news about development activities - life is as we would have expected it as residents.

But we know that there is real trouble in certain districts, where the American soldiers operate. Every time the American soldiers go somewhere bombs begin to blast.

SWAT VALLEY, PAKISTAN

Najaf, a resident of Swat valley, says locals are now fighting the militants themselves.

This has been the seventh day in a row that we have had curfew in our village.

The locals say that if the militants come to their area, the army targets their places

Najaf

The people they call Taleban militants move freely in the area. They are at large and move among the population.

We were expecting that after Musharraf left the tension would ease and there would be no more attacks and clashes between the militants and the army. But things are going from bad to worse.

People are terrified and they are dead against the army because hundreds of civilians have been killed in these operations.

There is a place about 20-25km away from us where local people have been fighting with the militants. The army hasn't even got there yet but people are so angry. The locals say that if the militants come to their area, the army targets their places and then they suffer.

That is why these people have come out of their area and are trying to remove militants from this area themselves.

People are very scared, they have been migrating from this area.

Akash says militants roam freely in his part of Swat valley.

The situation is very bad. People are very worried. The behaviour of the government is very bad. Innocent people have been killed.

There are a lot of al-Qaeda people in our village as well as security forces. They hurt one another. In the middle of it all innocent people have died. But the militants go freely from one village to another.

About one month ago there was a bomb blast near my house. The government said the Taleban were there - but they were not. The wrong people are dying.

People from my village don't even want to talk about the militants because they are so worried.

I was born in Swat and now there is no education. My school is damaged. There is curfew all the time. I am at home now. College is closed. I am very tired of this. Many people are leaving the area. Neither the security forces nor the Taleban let us stay.

NORTH WAZIRISTAN, PAKISTAN

A student from North Waziristan says people in his village used to support the Taleban - but not any more.

Militants in Waziristan

A number of militant groups operate in Waziristan

These militants are not fighting for Islam or Pakistan. I don't know what the hell they are. They want to harm Pakistan.

My home is in a village in North Waziristan and I spend a lot of time there and I know the situation there well.

People are very worried. The majority are sick of the bombardments by the Pakistani army and sometimes the US army as well.

On one side the militants attack and from the other side the Pakistan army and the Americans attack. We don't know what to do.

This is a tribal area. In some ways this situation is not new for us. People have already suffered a lot. There is no government here but we live according to our own culture.

Everybody used to support the Taleban. Nowadays I don't think they do. Maybe 20%-40% of people support them. They are fighting and nobody knows why. They lost the support of the locals because of attacks on Pakistani civilians.

The real Taleban who I used to see were local people. They just wanted to fight anyone who harmed Islam. People were in favour of the Taleban in 2001.

That Taleban is now dead. The new Taleban are different. They target civilians. They are not serving Islam.

Some names have been changed to protect identities.

SATYAMs SAGA

I had found this on http://cnu.posterous.com/satyam-employees-mail-about-th , al ovely thing to study .please read it below

I got a mail from my friend about some forwarded mail from a Satyam Employee about the recent scam by its Ex-CEO Ramalinga Raju.
I have reproduced the mail as is, followed by the things that I felt immediately on reading it.

Disclaimer: I do not work in Satyam or any of the big IT companies in India. I work for a small startup and these are my own views and not my employers'.

Its written by a Satyam employee:

At a time when almost 90% of my Satyam friends are cribbing about the fraud and betrayal by Ramalinga Raju, I have a slightly different opinion. It's bold of me to write this in black and white but this comes straight from my heart and experience.
Let me start by quoting an example of 2006. Most of my friends were unemployed with 50-60% plus marks in BTech, with a degree from an average University and hunting madly for a job. Whether people accept it today or not but the truth remains that Satyam was the ONLY saviour and the only mass recruiter who was ready to accept students who had back logs but had cleared them and also it did not put a very strict minimum marks criterion. And this was true not only for my small college at Lucknow but also those across India . Satyam is the fourth largest in IT in India. Looking at India's population I really want to thank Raju for giving some 54000 Indians jobs atleast for all these years . He was the reason for the revival of confidence and the reason for the bread and butter for many a families.
Satyam training was renowned all over India. Their STC training centre created numerous love stories and unexpected rekindling of a youthful environment where girls and boys were more indepenent than their college days . I remember most of my Satyam friends felt that they made better friends at Satyam's three to six months training than those in the four years of BTech.
Unfortunately people forget to thank God in sad times . I understand that what Raju did is deplorable and unpardonable. He should have treated business more formally and not dealt with it like a family affair . He should have been strict a couple of months or years before itself. Why did he hire so many non potential candidates and keep them on bench? When were the managers and the team mates last told that if they dont work hard, they will lose their job? Business cannot be run lousily.
I have been staying with some 200 odd girls for the last 2 years and many of them are from Satyam. Moreover I network a lot and I have lots of male friends at Satyam . I have seen how people tail gate to Satyam, how they give their swipe cards to others to swipe it on their behalf , how female employees have gone home sharp at 6am irrespective of when they landed at office, how employees sit at home for months at a stretch, prepare for all kind of post graduate entrance exams and still enjoy a full month's pay, how often they went for movies at local theatres at office hours, how often employees went to office just to sign on registers in the morning and at evening, how often they faked their certificates , how often they put unlimited fake medical and house rental bills.
How can we blame just one man when EACH AND EVERY person was disloyal ? How can we exclude Auditors like PwC ? How can we exclude the Board of Directors who have washed their hands off so clean? How can we exclude banks who gave hefty loans without true verfication? How can we exclude the Chief Minister of AP who allowed leniency for Raju's fellow businessman? How can we exclude managers who were never able to trace which bench employee under him had been away from office for how long ?
Yet how can people forget this is the same man whose ideas and potentials gave them an identity for the past several years? How many couples found the right match at an IT industry , courtesy Satyam and how many Andhra farmers benefited from their crores of investments in Satyam shares .How can people forget that Satyam launched its offices right at the doorsteps of a residential colony, where people can simply walk to work ?
The most gruesome experience that I can recollect was when a Satyam tag wearing person was waiting to attend an interview and I overheard him saying that he was in a business meeting at the My Home Satyam ( Madhapur) office when he was sitting right infront of me at a totally different company. When employees themselves show such a lousy attitude and dont care a damn for the brand that they carry around their neck, how can they expect others to care?
I am not saying that ALL Satyam employees are bad. I have known very dedicated people too, but my point is very clear, before pointing fingers at others, introspect .There are thousands of people who have completed certifications at the cost of Satyam, got trained at Satyam. Satyam made several freshers stand on their feet to get better jobs elsewhere across the globe and attain onsite exposure through Satyam.
What Raju did was to keep the business of Satyam going at any cost. I see a very smart man in him when he understood that he should rather accept his mistake than be caught by the USA laws . I see a selfish father in him too that he put a lot at stake for Maytas. However, he resigned with a lot of dignity and his letter of resignation shows humility. It takes a mammoth amount of courage to accept your mistake in public at a time when the media is ready to blow everything out of proportion. If humans dont make mistakes who else would ?
My last salute to this man is for creating such mass employment in India for 57k employees and 57k families when even opening a beetle(pan) shop in a lane in India is a challenge !! Thanks to him for creating income for all the thousands of families who benefited through food chains, the tiffin wallahs, the transport people and all those who made money by renting their houses.
I read he donated Rs 12000 crores from his personal pocket to give the January salary of his Satyam employees. Today Satyamites call Raju a FRAUD. The true and loyal Satyamites surely have all the reasons to say this word. But all the rest who sucked every rupee out of Satyam without doing any value addition need to understand - who was a bigger fraud.

Total Bull Crap.
First, this person doesn't know about running a services business in India. Having people in bench is very important for such companies(I am not cynical here). They have so many clients and god knows when a group of engineers need to be put into action. It is not wise or possible to go and search/hire people after a client has signed up. I tell this because I know the experience of working at multiple clients deadlines at the same time.
Second, he idolizes Raju. There is a special group inside Satyam who keep supporting Raju for whatever he does. There was even some website which was supporting him (http://www.ramalingaraju.com/ - now down)
Third, he says as if Raju was the key person for giving jobs to the 54000 people, even though they were a failure in college. It is not because he was a very kind person or was the follower of Mother Teresa. It is because, hiring all engineering graduates (whatever their marks were) was the only cost effective way to run the company. If all the IT majors in India say that they will only hire 90% or higher, then their workforce would be only 5000 (all companies together). Population is the major advantage for Indians and these IT companies clearly know how to use it to the advantage.
It can also be reworded as "the work that a 20 member team in India does is equivalent to the work that a 3 member startup in Sillicon Valley will do (in less than half the time)"
And finally, he says that everyone is to be blamed. Especially the engineers who sit around and watch movies during office hour.
Actually, I would blame Raju (and the board/top level management). They should be clear in the rules and company policy. Having a 10 employee company is like a local rowdy gang. No need of any rules. No need to keep track of the employees. But having a 50K personal organisation is like a military. Military should be strict. If it weren't, then the general is only to be blamed. There is no use blaming the freshly recruited soldier.
And about the employee who was lying about a meeting when he was sitting for another interview, this is what happens when you don't run your company properly. If your employees are not satisfied, people will go to greener pastures. It can happen in any company. Small or big.
These are the things I felt and I know that most of you might have some alternative view points which may prove me wrong. Please leave a comment below about what you think of the mail and my reply.

Update: One of my friends pointed out that he probably is a she.

since everyone does, a scam can't be treated as a legal plan for making money. End of the day, every thing is a business. If one is leading a company, he should set a good example for every one. The entire letter cant justify wrong things. if we keep on advocating for these, India would never improve. Rules are rules for all.... Dont go to admit all the faults you do, rather it creates a bad opinion on every one(right from the trainee to the Chairman) of SATYAM

True! You know what dude, my problem with raju has not been his financial leniency but the favoritism that was prevalent in satyam for years. I mean nobody except telugu speakers can really command any respect from their teams.I've heard even non- telugu managers cribbing about getting telugu engineers to work with them, because whenever they get a chance to move another project under a telugu manager, they always did!
Then why the fuck do you call it a fuking MNC!?? and that my friend is why I am not surprised to see them go down the gutter!

Your letter only proves how mismanaged SATYAM was and how big fraud the company was.The managers hired low potential and fake experienced people taking money, and most of the managers themselves put Fake experience...
The leader (Raju) is fraud, so are the most of the managers n employees...
Satyam is no big GOD Company in India, to be so loyal and proud of... It's one of the world's fake comapnies and mis-managed organisations...
54K employees were fed by duping 5 Crore people money and not from Raju's Pocket!!!!
